Most therapy exercises center primarily on the mind, focusing on conversational exercises to solve traumatic experiences, anxiety or stress-related episodes, and other issues. Somatic therapy uses exercises involving meditation, breathwork, and sometimes even dancing, in order to guide patients through an effective healing process.

Somatic therapy, or somatic experiencing, uses the awareness of one’s body sensations to help heal traumas and stresses instead of simply “recycling” negative emotions and feelings. Working on a sensory level allows patients to experience “discharging,” where negative emotions linked with traumatic events can be safely experienced and discarded.
The process varies for each individual, and there are many methods that can be used. Some involve breathing exercises and a practiced mindfulness, while others may involve grounding or eye movements.
Somatic experiencing with my therapy expertise has proven to provide healing to those suffering from anxiety, depression, and trauma. Even extreme trauma caused by PTSD, automobile accidents, chronic pain, and other serious events can be worked through with somatic therapy.

In a somatic session, I will work with you to identify how you personally respond to stressful situations, as well how your body specifically reacts in terms of the typical fight, flight, or freeze modes. While discussing and tracking these sensations, I will be able to note how your body seems to want to release this energy in a natural and comfortable manner.
While most therapy focuses on the “thinking” portion of the brain known as the neocortex, somatic therapy and experiencing focuses on the hindbrain, where sensory information is felt and processed. During this process you will gain insight and understanding about how your body informs how you think, instead of how your thought processes inform how you feel.
